At MeshEnvy, our mission has always been clear. We want to ensure that anyone, anywhere in Nevada, can stay connected. While the LoRa (Long Range) hardware standards provide a powerful foundation for this vision, the software protocols that drive that hardware are just as critical. After extensive testing and real-world experience, we are officially migrating our primary deployment strategy from Meshtastic to MeshCore.

Same Hardware, Different Standard

It is important to understand that the underlying technology remains the same. We still believe in the incredible power of LoRa. The hardware standard is robust and capable, but there are competing software protocols that determine how that hardware communicates.

For a long time, Meshtastic has been the go-to choice, supported largely by a dedicated community of volunteer enthusiasts. However, as our network requirements have grown, we have had to look closer at performance metrics that impact our users every day.

The Fresh Approach of MeshCore

Our testing has shown that MeshCore consistently outperforms Meshtastic in three key areas: speed, message reliability, and ease of use.

MeshCore represents a fresh approach from both a user experience standpoint and a software engineering standpoint. Because the MeshCore team was able to start with new ideas, they moved forward unencumbered by the legacy compatibility requirements that often slow down Meshtastic. By building from the ground up, they have created a protocol that feels modern and functions with a level of stability that our mission requires.

Reliability in the Field

While Meshtastic may still have a place for specific or niche applications, the ongoing day-to-day reliability issues have become a hurdle for our deployment goals. In the rugged and expansive landscapes of Nevada, "mostly working" is not enough. We need a system that ensures messages reach their destination without constant troubleshooting. MeshCore provides that peace of mind.

Staying Agile for Nevada

Our commitment to Nevada means that MeshEnvy will never be tied to a single platform forever. Our values are rooted in community building and staying connected. As hardware and software continue to evolve, we will continue to evaluate the best tools available.

Right now, MeshCore is the best service to our mission. It aligns with our values of providing a professional, reliable, and accessible network for the community. We are excited about this new chapter and the increased connectivity it will bring to the Silver State.

There is a specific kind of awe that hits you when you reach the top of Ophir Hill. The summit sits in the Virginia Range above historic Virginia City in Storey County, at about 7,782 feet above sea level. From there the whole basin feels within reach, ridgelines in every direction and the Comstock country laid out below.

The journey to the summit began that same morning at Café del Rio in Virginia City. Tim and I spent several hours tucked away over maps and radio coverage projections, working through routes up the hills and the most useful points for testing. When the plan felt solid, we loaded into Tim's side-by-side and spent the morning bumping up the Cross Three trail. The reward was a 360-degree view of Nevada that no screen fully captures.

Standing on the shoulders of giants

When you step onto the Ophir crest, you learn quickly that you are not the first to notice its value. The peak already hosts large communications facilities and heavy infrastructure. It is humbling to stand there and remember how much engineering went into hauling steel, concrete, and power up the same grades you just crawled in a UTV.

We were there to add a small footprint of our own, not to pretend the hill was empty. The scale of what came before puts our weekend test gear in honest perspective.

The philosophy of the "jank node"

While we were on the summit, we called the contact who operates the towers, said hello, and asked whether we could zip-tie a test node to his structure. He was generous enough to give us the green light. After looking at what we had in the packs, we chose a different route anyway.

Because this was an off-the-cuff weekend trip, we did not have heavy-duty brackets or specialty hardware. We had a T-stake, zip ties, and a clear idea of what we wanted to learn. We drove the stake into the slope so the node had a stable-enough home for a cautious test.

Inside the team we jokingly call builds like this jank nodes. To us, jank means you can assemble something effective without a trailer full of shop tools. The mount can look scrappy on Instagram and still be built with intention. Our field tests follow the same safety expectations we apply everywhere: nothing goes up in a way that shortcuts the standards we coordinate with the BLM Carson Field Office partnership, fire departments, and emergency partners. Speed never buys a pass on compliance.

Massive results from small steps

When I showed the photos back at base, people laughed at the humble rig. The performance was not funny at all. In engineering and community work, zero to one is still the hardest hop. Sometimes perfect is the enemy of done, and getting a live path on the air is the whole ballgame.

Despite the simple mount and an inexpensive antenna from Amazon, range testing showed the little node conversing with both Spanish Benchmark and Peavine Peak. Those sites sit on the order of thirty miles away, which is exactly the kind of proof you want before you invest in a permanent build.

This is not the final home for production gear. The data still matter. They confirm that the cross-basin link is real terrain, not wishful thinking, and they feed the formal BLM range work ahead of us. A modest, unpolished test like this can still unlock the momentum the larger mission needs.

We highlighted this location in our BLM Carson Field Office partnership announcement; here is a short field diary from early visits to the site.

Mesh kit, poles, and packs do not teleport to ridgelines. Most days start with the quiet work of checking batteries, lashings, and what you are willing to carry for the next few miles of sun and wind.

Access is honest high-desert travel: dirt roads when you have them, loose rock when you do not, and a motorcycle or truck where it makes sense to shorten the schlep without tearing up wet soils.
This country is not empty. Raptors use the same thermals and outcrops you want for a clean radio path. We keep disturbance small, avoid nesting areas when we know them, and treat sudden wildlife as a cue to pause rather than push.

When a site needs a simple mast anchor, a steel T-post, a block to protect the top, and a few careful swings with a hammer still beat most shortcuts. The goal is a solid stake that will not walk in the wind without chewing up more ground than the site needs.

With a short mast vertical, you get the node above the worst of the ground clutter and can start to see whether the path matches what the map promised. The valley, dry lake patches, and distant ranges fall into one continuous horizon.

Then comes the human-scale check: three people on a pile of summit rocks, gloves still dusty, making sure the rig is plumb enough and that nobody is standing in a fall line if a gust hits.

The American flag on the mast was left by someone else before we arrived. We did not put it there, but we were glad to see it. After a long carry and a careful install, it felt like a quiet, fitting nod to the work that day.

Sometimes the best "configuration screen" is quartzite in full sun. A few quiet minutes on the rocks are enough to confirm routing ideas, message paths, or just that everyone still has water before heading higher.

From the upper trails, the basin opens up. Rooftops, arterials, and pockets of sage read as one terrain. A dirt bike on the grade is only there to get people and tools where they need to go without carving new lines through wet clay or cryptobiotic soil.

If you hang around the off-grid tech space long enough, the words start to bleed together. Mesh, LoRa, Off-Grid, Decentralized. We use them like they're synonyms, but if we're being honest with ourselves, they aren't.

If you hang around the off-grid tech space long enough, the words start to bleed together. Mesh, LoRa, Off-Grid, Decentralized. We use them like they're synonyms, but if we're being honest with ourselves, they aren't.

Lately, I've been thinking about what we're actually trying to build here. Is it just a hobbyist version of the cellular network, or is it something fundamentally different?

Routable People, Not Just Repeaters

To me, a mesh is a very specific thing: it's a network where the people are the routable nodes. There's a trend in the community right now, in projects like Meshcore, that cheats a little bit. They recreate the grid in an off-grid environment by relying on a hierarchy of repeaters and clients. It's effective, sure, but it's essentially just building a private version of the same centralized infrastructure we're trying to move away from. You have the infrastructure and you have the users.

Now, don't get me wrong: unmanned outposts are definitely necessary for coverage. But where is the line? I think the line is crossed when the user is no longer a route. That is Meshcore's fundamental departure. It skirts the technical challenge and the central issue of decentralization. They seem to recognize this, too, because they are starting to implement routable clients. That's a move in the right direction, but the fact that it's off by default is a bit of a let-down for a nerd like me. It's practical, but it ignores the most interesting technical challenge of this whole space: how do you make a fast, resilient, ad-hoc network of routable nodes that move around?

That's why, in my opinion, what Meshtastic is doing is so much more significant. They are tackling that harder problem head-on. A network that exists only because we are standing near each other, and disappears the moment we walk away, is a difficult technical hurdle, but it's the only one worth jumping if we want real autonomy.

The Cult of the 30 Dollar Device

Then there's the hardware. We talk about LoRa purity, and there's definitely a romance to it. There is something incredibly cool about imagining a tiny packet of data hopping along LoRa links, jumping from one backyard to another, until it finds its destination.

But why do we care so much about these little 30 dollar radios?

Think about it: if we could do all of this from our phones using a standard app and existing towers, it wouldn't feel special. It would just be another messenger. The specialness comes from the fact that we own the hardware. When you put a device in your pocket, you aren't just a user of a service, you are a literal part of the solution. You are the infrastructure.

From LoRa to Democratized Links

Is LoRa the end-all-be-all? Probably not.

As we get deeper into this, the conversation naturally shifts. People start talking about microwave towers, Yagi antennas, and directed long-distance links. When you start talking about those, it stops being about a specific radio protocol and starts being about democratized links. It's about control. It's about the fact that we, as a community, own the path the data takes. Whether it's a 30 dollar puck in your pocket or a directed microwave link on your roof, the goal is the same: a network that belongs to us.

What Do We Really Want?

So, is a mesh just a way to send a text when the towers go down? Or is it a fundamental shift in how we think about connectivity?

If we just want the grid but without the monthly bill, then repeaters and clients are fine. But if we want something that can't be turned off, something that lives and breathes with the community, then we have to keep chasing the hard stuff. We have to keep being the nodes.

Because at the end of the day, the mesh isn't just the hardware. It's us.

In a state like Nevada, connectivity is defined by the land. Approximately 85% of our state consists of public lands, the majority of which are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). To achieve our goal of a truly connected Nevada, working alongside the stewards of this land is not just logical; it is essential.

We are thrilled to announce that MeshEnvy has entered into a strategic partnership with the BLM Carson Field Office.

A Two-Year Right of Way

On March 31, 2026, the Carson Field Office granted us a two-year right of way to perform comprehensive site surveys and range testing. This is a critical first step in identifying and establishing future communication sites. This agreement allows us to gather the data needed to build a robust backbone for the mesh network across the Carson District.

Our team has already begun the physical work. We have strapped on our hiking boots and grabbed our walking poles to summit some of the highest peaks in the district. Getting this technology to the highest points ensures the widest possible coverage for the residents and visitors of Nevada.

Approved locations

Among other areas still being evaluated, the Carson Field Office has granted us permission to place equipment at three sites that illustrate why height and line of sight matter in northern Nevada: Spanish Benchmark, Tule Peak, and Virginia Peak. All three are in Washoe County on public land the BLM helps administer.

Spanish Benchmark sits northeast of Reno near Spanish Springs. Its summit is about 6,165 feet above sea level and forms a strong local high point with roughly a thousand feet of prominence, which supports coverage across the Spanish Springs Valley and the Truckee Meadows rim.

Tule Peak is the highest summit in the Virginia Mountains at about 8,725 feet. It rises sharply above Pyramid Lake to the north and carries more than 3,400 feet of topographic prominence, making it one of northwest Nevada’s major landmarks for long-range radio paths.

Virginia Peak is the high point of the Pah Rah Range at about 8,370 feet. It is the most prominent summit in Washoe County and already hosts extensive communications infrastructure, including National Weather Service NEXRAD radar. The summit lies on BLM-managed land, where we can add community backbone capacity while respecting existing facilities and spectrum users.

Stewardship and consultation

MeshEnvy works in close collaboration with tribal councils and authorities to make sure historic and culturally significant places are identified, protected, and treated respectfully. We take the same approach with environmental agencies and with professionals who understand living landscapes, including biologists, ecologists, and nature preservationists, so that field plans reflect real ecological and human context.

We remain attentive to other stakeholders as well: Nevada's ranchers and working rangelands, wildlife and sensitive species, operators who already maintain communications equipment on the heights, and the shared interest in protecting Nevada's beautiful skyline and wide-open views wherever we can. These factors, and others that surface during review, are weighed for every site before a boot touches the ground.

Collaborative Innovation

The reception we have received from the Carson Field Office has been incredible. From our very first meeting, their team has been generous with their time and expertise.

There is a genuine sense of shared excitement when we demonstrate the technology. When I walk into their office with a backpack full of hardware to show exactly how a mesh network functions, their eyes light up. Ironically, the BLM staff understands the need for this technology better than most. Even in their own field offices, cell reception is frequently unavailable. Seeing a solution that operates independently of traditional cellular infrastructure has sparked many conversations about how these tools can serve both the public and the agencies that manage our lands.

A Mission for Rural Nevada

As a public service charity, our focus remains on linking all of Nevada. We are particularly dedicated to serving rural and underserved areas where commercial providers often find it unprofitable to operate. This partnership with the BLM is a major milestone in that journey.

We look forward to a long and productive relationship with the BLM. By working together, we are turning the challenge of Nevada's vast, rugged terrain into an opportunity for community building and reliable communication. We will see you on the trails.

This designation is much more than a legal formality. It transforms how we can build and sustain Nevada's mesh network:

Tax-Deductible Contributions: Individual and corporate donations are now tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Grant Eligibility: We can now pursue federal, state, and private foundation grants that require 501(c)(3) status.

Corporate Partnerships: Many technology and infrastructure providers offer special programs and discounts for verified charitable organizations.

Public Trust: This status reinforces our commitment to transparency, accountability, and community-owned infrastructure.

Achieving this status would not have been possible without the initial support of our "Founding Members" and everyone who contributed to our early fundraisers. Your support covered the filing fees and operational costs required to establish this formal foundation.

With our federal status secured, we are pivoting from "formation" to "deployment." We are now working on:

Establishing our official nonprofit banking and financial tracking.

Launching our merchandise store to provide a self-sustaining revenue stream.

Applying for infrastructure grants to accelerate the deployment of solar-powered nodes across Nevada's most remote corridors.

Stay tuned as we continue to build a more resilient Nevada, one node at a time.

We're excited to announce that MeshEnvy NCC has officially submitted our Articles of Incorporation to the Nevada Secretary of State. This marks a pivotal milestone in our journey to formalize our organization and expand our mission across Nevada.

Making It Official

Today, MeshEnvy NCC took a major step forward by filing our Articles of Incorporation with the Nevada Secretary of State. This submission represents months of planning, community meetings, and strategic discussions about how best to serve Nevada's mesh networking needs.

The Articles of Incorporation establish MeshEnvy as a formal nonprofit corporation in the State of Nevada, setting the foundation for everything we're building toward.

Our First Board of Directors

As part of the incorporation process, we've declared our founding Board of Directors:

Ben Allfree - MeshEnvy NCC Founder

Ed Mitchell - SAR, DRI, NSHE

Leslie Allfree - Emergency/Disaster Response

This initial board brings together diverse expertise in technology, emergency response, and community organization. Together, they'll guide MeshEnvy through our next phase of growth and development.

What This Means

Filing our Articles of Incorporation is more than just paperwork; it's the formal beginning of MeshEnvy as a Nevada nonprofit corporation. Once approved by the state, we'll have the legal foundation needed to:

Enter into formal partnerships with organizations and municipalities

Open bank accounts and manage finances transparently

Build organizational infrastructure that scales with our mission

Pursue grants and funding opportunities

Establish clear governance and accountability structures

Next Steps: 501(c)(3) Status

Once the Nevada Secretary of State approves our incorporation, our next major milestone will be applying for federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS. This designation will bring additional benefits:

Tax-deductible donations: Supporters can contribute and receive tax benefits

Grant eligibility: Access to federal, state, and private grants reserved for 501(c)(3) organizations

Enhanced credibility: Recognition as a public charity serving Nevada communities

Foundation support: Ability to apply for funding from charitable foundations

The 501(c)(3) application process is thorough, but it's a crucial step in maximizing our capacity to serve Nevada.

While we navigate the administrative requirements of nonprofit formation, our core mission remains unchanged: Stand anywhere in Nevada and reach another node.

Every formalization step we take, from incorporation to 501(c)(3) status, is about expanding our capacity to deliver on that mission. We're building the organizational infrastructure that will help us blanket Nevada with resilient mesh network coverage.

None of this would be possible without our growing community of mesh networking enthusiasts, technical contributors, potential partners, and supporters. Your involvement at our October 21st general meeting, your node deployments, and your continued support are what make MeshEnvy real.

This is just the beginning. We're excited to share each step of this journey with you as we build Nevada's mesh network together.

On Tuesday, October 21st, MeshEnvy held a general meeting at Coffee n Comics in Reno, bringing together a diverse group of community members, students, emergency responders, and mesh networking enthusiasts to discuss our mission and next steps.

Meeting Attendees

The meeting brought together an impressive cross-section of Nevada's community:

Ben Allfree - MeshEnvy Founder (@.noaxis)

Charlie Allfree - TMCC Student (@shinynachoz)

Kay Allfree - UNR Student (@rorozontor)

Leslie Allfree - Emergency/Disaster Response (@lka_em)

Ed Mitchell - SAR, DRI, NSHE (@tenacious_dolphin_46523)

Scott - Minnesota Mesh (@steepclimb)

Winston - Gardnerville Mesh

Derek - Casino/Firmware

Dan O'Day - Nonprofit (@danoday775)

Mission Statement Discussion

The group engaged in a productive discussion about MeshEnvy's mission: "Stand anywhere in Nevada and reach another node." This simple yet powerful statement captures our vision of creating a resilient, statewide mesh network that ensures no one in Nevada is ever truly isolated from communications.

Strategic Partnerships and Value Propositions

One of the meeting's key outcomes was identifying potential partner organizations and the value propositions for each:

Emergency/Disaster Response

Value: Reliable communications when traditional infrastructure fails

Partners: Emergency services, disaster response teams, search and rescue

Ranching Communities

Value: Off-grid communications for remote operations

Partners: Nevada ranching associations, rural communities

Mining Operations

Value: Communications in remote mining locations

Partners: Mining companies, geological survey organizations

UNR Webcam Network

Value: Integration with existing infrastructure

The group discussed the initial composition of MeshEnvy's Board of Directors, recognizing the need to balance different types of expertise:

Networkers: Those with connections and relationships in the community

Doers: Those with technical skills and hands-on experience

This balance ensures both strategic vision and practical execution capabilities.

Next Steps: Node Site Identification

The meeting concluded with a concrete action item for all attendees: By Friday, October 24th, each person will identify a potential node site and determine who needs to give permission for deployment.

This collaborative approach to site identification leverages the group's diverse knowledge of Nevada's geography and community connections.

Looking Forward

This meeting represents a significant step forward for MeshEnvy. The diverse group of attendees, from students to emergency responders to experienced mesh networkers, demonstrates the broad appeal and potential impact of our mission.

The combination of strategic partnership discussions and practical next steps shows that MeshEnvy is moving from vision to action. With each attendee identifying potential node sites, we're building the foundation for Nevada's first comprehensive mesh network.

Get Involved

Interested in joining MeshEnvy's mission? Here's how you can help:

Identify a node site: Find a location in your area that could host a mesh node

Connect with partners: Help us reach out to emergency services, ranching communities, or other potential partners

Share your expertise: Whether you're technical, organizational, or community-focused, your skills are valuable

Stay informed: Follow our progress as we build Nevada's mesh network

Together, we're creating resilient communications infrastructure for all Nevadans. The meeting on October 21st was just the beginning. The real work of building Nevada's mesh network starts now.

We're thrilled to announce that our GoFundMe campaign is now live! This is the first step toward making Nevada-wide mesh network coverage a reality.

Our First Goal: $3,000

We're starting with an achievable but meaningful target: $3,000. This initial fundraising goal isn't just about equipment; it's about unlocking the infrastructure we need to build something sustainable.

What $3,000 Enables

This first milestone will allow us to:

Form a 501(c)(3) nonprofit - Cover filing fees, legal costs, and initial operating expenses

Deploy initial nodes - Begin building the Reno-to-Playa corridor with our first batch of solar-powered nodes

Establish financial infrastructure - Set up proper banking and accounting systems

Why This Matters

Right now, we're limited in what we can do. Without nonprofit status, we can't:

Accept tax-deductible donations

Set up a Stripe account for our merchandise store

Enable GitHub Sponsors for recurring donations

Activate monthly recurring donations on GoFundMe

Open a nonprofit bank account

Apply for most grants and funding opportunities

Your $3,000 investment unlocks all of this.

Once we establish 501(c)(3) status, we can scale up fundraising efforts, accept recurring donations, and access grant funding that could take us from a handful of nodes to statewide coverage.

The Vision

We're not just building a network; we're building resilient infrastructure for Nevada's communities. Imagine:

Burners having reliable communication from Reno all the way to the playa

Rural residents staying connected even when cell towers fail

Emergency responders communicating during natural disasters

Travelers having safety communication across Nevada's vast empty spaces

For $30,000-$35,000 total, we could cover all of Nevada with 300-350 solar-powered LoRa nodes. That's less than the cost of a new car, for an entire state's emergency communication backbone.

But we have to start somewhere. And that somewhere is $3,000.

Every Dollar Counts

At this stage, every contribution makes a real difference:

$25 - Covers part of the nonprofit filing fees

$50 - Contributes toward legal document preparation

$100 - Funds one complete solar-powered node

$500 - Covers a significant portion of 501(c)(3) formation costs

$1,000+ - Enables both nonprofit formation and initial node deployment

No amount is too small. Whether you give $5 or $500, you're helping build something that will serve Nevada for years to come.

What Happens Next

Here's our roadmap once we hit $3,000:

Phase 1: Foundation (Months 1-2)

File for 501(c)(3) status

Establish nonprofit bank account

Set up accounting and transparency systems

Deploy first 3-4 nodes on the Reno-to-Playa route

Activate Stripe for merchandise sales

Enable recurring donation options

Launch official merch store

Continue node deployment

Apply for grants and larger funding

Expand to other Nevada corridors

Build partnerships with communities and organizations

Recruit volunteers for node hosting and maintenance

We're excited to share that MeshEnvy is exploring the path toward becoming a Nevada nonprofit organization. This would be a significant step forward in our mission to build resilient mesh networks across the Silver State.

Why a Nonprofit?

As MeshEnvy continues to grow, we're recognizing the need for a more formal structure to maximize our impact. Becoming a nonprofit organization would open several important doors:

Partnership Opportunities

Many organizations prefer to work with established nonprofits. Whether it's municipalities, emergency services, other nonprofits, or community organizations, having nonprofit status would make collaboration smoother and more straightforward. We could formalize partnerships that would help expand mesh network coverage across Nevada.

Grant Eligibility

Numerous federal, state, and private grants are specifically designed for nonprofit organizations working on community infrastructure and emergency communications. As a nonprofit, MeshEnvy would be able to apply for funding that could significantly accelerate our network deployment and outreach efforts.

Tax Benefits for Supporters

With 501(c)(3) designation, donations to MeshEnvy would be tax-deductible. This would make it easier for individuals and businesses to support our mission while receiving tax benefits for their contributions.

Transparency and Accountability

Nonprofit status comes with reporting requirements and governance structures that ensure transparency. This formalization would reinforce our commitment to operating in the community's best interest and maintaining public trust.

Why Nevada?

Nevada is the perfect home for MeshEnvy's nonprofit status:

Geographic opportunity: Nevada's vast open spaces and challenging terrain make it ideal for demonstrating the value of mesh networks

Community need: Rural Nevada communities often lack reliable communications infrastructure

Local focus: We're committed to serving Nevada first, building from our home base outward

What This Would Mean for the Community

For those already involved with MeshEnvy and those considering joining, this would change nothing about our core mission, but could significantly expand our capacity to deliver:

Same mission: Building resilient, off-grid communications networks

Greater reach: Ability to work with more partners and access more resources

More opportunities: Expanded grant funding for equipment, education, and deployment

Community ownership: Formal governance structure with community representation

The Path Forward

We're exploring what nonprofit formation would look like for MeshEnvy. This includes understanding the requirements for establishing a board of directors, drafting bylaws, and eventually filing for 501(c)(3) status. It's a significant undertaking, but one that could open many doors for our mission.

We'll keep the community updated as we learn more and make decisions about next steps. With nonprofit status, MeshEnvy could more effectively pursue our vision of blanketing Nevada with resilient mesh network coverage, making off-grid communications accessible to everyone who needs it.

Get Involved

Interested in helping shape MeshEnvy's future? Here's how you can help:

Deploy a node: Help build the network by hosting a LoRa node

Share expertise: If you have experience with nonprofit formation, grant writing, or community organization, we'd love to hear from you

Share your thoughts: What do you think about MeshEnvy becoming a nonprofit? Your input matters

Spread the word: Tell others about mesh networking and MeshEnvy's mission

Stay informed: Follow along as we explore this next phase

Together, we're building something bigger than a network; we're building resilient community infrastructure for all Nevadans.

The 120-mile journey from Reno to Gerlach to the playa is one of Nevada's most iconic routes. Every summer, tens of thousands of Burners make this pilgrimage to Black Rock City. But once you leave Reno, cell coverage becomes spotty, then non-existent.

A LoRa network along this corridor would provide:

Safety communications for travelers in remote areas

Coordination for Burning Man participants and camps

Emergency connectivity in areas with zero cell service

Proof of concept for Nevada's larger mesh network vision

The Route

The primary route follows:

Reno (starting point)

US-395 North through Sparks and into Washoe Valley

NV-447 North through Wadsworth

Continued NV-447 past Pyramid Lake

Gerlach (gateway town)

County Road 34 to the playa (~8 miles)

Total distance: ~120 miles

Node Placement Strategy

With 20-mile average relay distances in Nevada's open terrain:

Reno Hub – Downtown or high elevation point

Spanish Springs/Pyramid Highway – ~20 miles north

Pyramid Lake Area – ~45 miles north (tourist area, safety critical)

Nixon/Wadsworth – ~60 miles north

Empire – ~90 miles north (last services before playa)

Gerlach – ~110 miles north (gateway town)

Playa Entry – ~120 miles north

Playa Center – Black Rock City location (for event coverage)

This is where things get exciting. The Burning Mesh community has already built an incredible Meshtastic deployment for Black Rock City, providing playa-wide communication for camps, art cars, and adventurers.

By extending our network to the playa, we can:

Bridge to Burning Mesh – Connect their playa network to the outside world

Year-round coverage – Provide connectivity beyond the week-long event

Emergency services – Support year-round playa visitors and researchers

Shared infrastructure – Collaborate on hardware, firmware, and best practices

Manageable scope – 8-10 nodes vs. 300+ for statewide

High impact – Serves a heavily-traveled route with spotty coverage

Community support – Burning Man community is tech-savvy and engaged

Proof of concept – Demonstrates what's possible before scaling up

What would it take to blanket the entire state of Nevada with a LoRa mesh network? Let's do the math.

The Nevada Advantage

Nevada is uniquely positioned for long-range radio communications. With its relatively flat terrain and minimal vegetation in many areas, line-of-sight conditions are exceptional. While mountainous regions exist, much of Nevada's 110,577 square miles consists of wide open desert: perfect for radio propagation.

Range Assumptions

In ideal Nevada conditions, LoRa nodes can achieve impressive ranges:

Typical relay distance: 15-25 miles between nodes

Conservative estimate: 20 miles average

Coverage area per node: ~1,257 square miles (π × 20²)

The Redundancy Factor

A reliable mesh network needs redundancy. If one node fails, the network should route around it. For robust coverage, we want at least 3x redundancy. That means any location should be reachable by at least 3 different nodes.

With 3x redundancy:

Effective coverage per node: ~419 square miles

Nodes required: 110,577 ÷ 419 ≈ 264 nodes

Edge Cases and Reality

The 264-node estimate assumes perfect hexagonal packing and uniform terrain. Reality requires more:

Mountain ranges: The Sierra Nevada, Ruby Mountains, and other ranges create radio shadows requiring additional nodes

Urban areas: Cities like Las Vegas and Reno need denser coverage for higher traffic

Border connectivity: Nodes along state borders need extra coverage to maintain mesh integrity

Maintenance access: Some locations are more practical than others

A realistic deployment would likely need 300-350 nodes for comprehensive, reliable coverage.

The Price Tag

At $100 per node (including solar setup, weatherproofing, and all hardware, ready to deploy):

Conservative (264 nodes): $26,400

Realistic (300 nodes): $30,000

Robust (350 nodes): $35,000

These are complete, turnkey costs. Each node is ready to be placed and activated.

Is It Feasible?

Absolutely! For $30,000-$35,000, you could provide off-grid communications coverage to an entire state. Compare this to:

Single cell tower: $150,000-$300,000 per tower (plus ongoing carrier costs)

Satellite system: Tens of millions in development and deployment

Nevada's annual road salt budget: ~$3 million

A 300-node LoRa network covering Nevada represents one of the most cost-effective large-scale communications infrastructure projects imaginable. This is less than the cost of a new car: for an entire state's mesh network.

The Community Approach

Rather than one entity funding the entire network, a community-driven approach makes even more sense:

300 volunteers each deploying 1 node: Network funded

Cost per participant: $100 (turnkey, ready to place)

Benefit: Statewide resilient communications

Effort: Place one node in an optimal location

This is the true power of mesh networks: distributed ownership creating resilient infrastructure. Three hundred people, $100 each, and Nevada has off-grid communications.

Conclusion

Covering Nevada with LoRa is not just possible; it's remarkably affordable. With 300-350 nodes strategically placed across the state's 110,577 square miles, we could create a resilient, off-grid communications network for $30,000-$35,000 total.

The real challenge isn't the money: it's coordination and finding optimal placement locations. But for a state as vast and remote as Nevada, the value proposition is undeniable.
